Africa Enterprise Trust (AET) is a development agency operating in central and southern Africa.

Working with government and community groups, it invests in training and educational projects in order to help the people of Africa help themselves.

Raising a smile

Aid International has taken Building Teams to Lusaka, Zambia each year since 2002 to work on AET's projects there. That first year we converted a very basic house into a beautiful home for rescued street kids called Chimwemwe, which means Smiles.

In February 2003 nine orphaned street children were taken into the house and have been looked after ever since by their new “mum and dad”, Margaret and Lamson.

Their lives have been transformed – they are now part of a loving family and all go to the local school where they are doing extremely well.

Don't stop us now

A second property has since been purchased and the Building Team of 2006 started the refurbishment work.

In January 2007 the first child moved into Chimwemwe 2 with her new “mum and dad”, Maureen and Abraham, and there are plans to send another build team to carry out work on an extension in due course, increasing the number of children that can be offered a new home.

AET also has a Vocational Training Centre at Kingsgate House, and general building and maintenance work has been carried out there by subsequent Building Teams.
